Hazelwood vs. Kulhmeier
A high school journalism class amendments were violated when they were prohibited to publish two articles in the school newspaper. The articles were said to be inappropriet and unsuitable for the younger students. The journalism class picked topics on different matters that were taking place. They researched and wrote their articles. Their teacher had already approved of the articles and submitted a copy to the principal.
This is when the problem started. The principal of the school deleted two of the articles. She based herself on protecting the students. In reality, what is their to protect? Young minds know more than an experienced adult. The corruption of TV, ads, and reading instruments, allows them to explore beyong their, and our imaginations. They are aware of sex, corruption, drugs, and illegal things. You always want to protect and close their eyes and ears. You want to keep them safe, but sometimes is better to be aware than sorry!
The first article dealt with a pregnant student whos name was NOT identified. The article mentioned sex, and birth control; which is not anything new to any body. The principal should have been grateful that the student would be more aware of how to prevent diseases, or pregnancies.
The second article dealt with divorce. The student placed her father in the worst way. The principal disagreed and thought that it wasn't right. When you give a statement in an interview everything is valid.
Both articles were deletion, and turmoil occured. "Work so hard for nothing, that's not fair." This case was taken to court and the court ruled in the students favor. Their first amendment rights had been violated.

REMOVED!!! OR BYE

How is it possible that you cannot wear what you like? A student in junior high school wore an anti war shirt, and was asked to remove it, turn it inside out, or go home. It is the United States, and we do not have the freedom to decided what we want to wear! How is that possible? The student was not causing any harm, nor had any ideas to invade the school. This shirt was simply a form of expression based on his ideologies.
The faculty and staff at the school overreacted and sent the student home. He did not remove the shirt, and went home. He stood up for what he believed was right. As the student got home, he immediatly went online and googled to seee if it was fair what had been done to him. As he reasearched he found a case that was similar to his; "Tinker vs. Des Moins." In this case students wore black wristbands to symbolize what they believed, and the court ruled in their favor. The student immediatly contacted the media and showed everyone that what had been done to him was out of proportion.

Roth v. United States
What is freedom all about? Can we really speak up or only in certain occasions? Freedom of speech is enacted in the first amendmen, but when "government takes place, things change."
In the case of Roth v. United States, Roth was a victim. Is sending book by mail such a crime? Everyone chooses what they want to read and what they want to believe. The Supreme Court claimes to say that, "obscene' material has no protection under the First Amendment. According to the Court, the guarantees of the freedom of expression were never meant to be absolute protection for every possible utterance of any sort - therefore, some standards are reasonable to set." When there is a need to be just, things are not. What is free speech all about.http://atheism.about.com/library/decisions/speech/bldec_RothUS.htm

Think! Think! Tinker
When you think something is wrong you should speak up. Don't think that your voice shouldn't be heard. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and that was the case of the Tinker family. Two young teenager viewed and opposed the vietnam war. They wanted to prostest against it. They thought that the best way was to wear black armbands.
The next day the children went to school, and this armbands were to the dislike of the principal. They were immediatly sent home and suspended until they let go of that foolish idea.
Why do people go to extremes to try to silence freedom of speech? It could be a treat to other ideas, and competition is not good. Well the court reached the supreme court and the court ruled in favor of the black armbands. The court claimed to say that as long as this did not interfere with the student work, and learning, then it was okay.

Feiner v. New York

Politicians have everything at the tip of their hands. They can do and undo whatever they want, and however they feel like. Power gets you many places, and teaches what life is all about. (Don't get me wrong that not good) If their is a threat it is good bye for us, and Hawaii for them.
Irving Feiner, a young man guide in the right path. Not harming anyone, but trying to help out through expression. He gave a speech; one from the heart. He demanded right like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcom X, and other great fighters. Like these heroes were treated so was Feiner. He only did what he though was right.
Though Feiner was exercising freedom of speech, he was found guilty in the eyes of the supreme court. The Supreme Court said that he was disruptive and out of order.

FREE FREE FREE

"Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
As stated in the United States Constitution, we the people have the right to freely exercise what we believe in. We should not be limited, and should always have voice. Their have been many debated throughout times. Before everything was so different in contrast to today. It is the people from before that we have to give thanks. It is for their effort that today, we are free. When I say free, I mean free. Now we really count as individuals. WE ARE THE PEOPLE, and like people we shall rule.
The picture to the left, is just a symbol of how many feel. Yes, it is up to us to make of it depending how we want it.
The society now is under no pressure, and can freely speak as long as it is not disruptive. The Magna Carta passed in 1215, was the establishing point to allow rights and liberties to the citizens.
